Labor Market Regimes and Mobility through a Markov Chain in Chile
In this paper we analyze the dynamics of labor markets in Chile. Our goal is to understand how flexibility in the labor market has changed over time, and in particular, to relate this change with the legislation framework. We analyze mobility in four different periods, each of them associated with different labor regimes. Based on flows, we estimate transition probabilities across three relevant possible states: unemployment, employment, and out of the labor force. Our finding shows that since 1974 employment became less secure. The probability for an employed person of becoming unemployed almost doubled since 1974 and remained thereafter. Also, the probability of remaining unemployed increased from 26,1% in the period 1962-73, to over 40% in the periods 1974-79 and 1980-89, but felt to 25,6% after 1990. This in spite the average unemployment rate doubled between these two periods. The probabilities related with discourage and added worker effects were stable in the different periods considered, except since 1990, where the hypothesis of discouraged workers is challenged. Finally, whilst the natural rate of unemployment doubled after the reforms in 1974, it remained high until the last period, starting in 1990. Changes in participation compensated such changes, and hence, the expected length of unemployment did not increase dramatically in the period, remaining stable around two quarterslabor markets, transition probabilities, unemployment.
Construction of a Spatial Housing Price Index by Estimating an Almost Ideal Demand System
The aim of this article is to build a spatial housing price index for the Chilean communes (the commune political body similar to a municipality or county). The first step is to recover hedonic prices of three housing attributes by estimating a mixed index model (Bowden, 1992) using a generalized method of moments procedure. Secondly, a censored almost ideal demand system (Deaton and Muellbauer, 1980) is estimated to build expenditures for every commune and to compare them among different spatial units, while maintaining a constant utility level. Using micro data from the 2009 CASEN survey, we show that there are important differences in housing prices among Chilean communes and the axiomatic approach tends to understate spatial index compared to economic approach.spatial housing price index, mixed index, demand system with censored data, economic approach
Resolved Motion Control for 3D Underactuated Bipedal Walking using Linear Inverted Pendulum Dynamics and Neural Adaptation
We present a framework to generate periodic trajectory references for a 3D
under-actuated bipedal robot, using a linear inverted pendulum (LIP) based
controller with adaptive neural regulation. We use the LIP template model to
estimate the robot's center of mass (CoM) position and velocity at the end of
the current step, and formulate a discrete controller that determines the next
footstep location to achieve a desired walking profile. This controller is
equipped on the frontal plane with a Neural-Network-based adaptive term that
reduces the model mismatch between the template and physical robot that
particularly affects the lateral motion. Then, the foot placement location
computed for the LIP model is used to generate task space trajectories (CoM and
swing foot trajectories) for the actual robot to realize stable walking. We use
a fast, real-time QP-based inverse kinematics algorithm that produces joint
references from the task space trajectories, which makes the formulation
independent of the knowledge of the robot dynamics. Finally, we implemented and
evaluated the proposed approach in simulation and hardware experiments with a
Digit robot obtaining stable periodic locomotion for both cases.Comment: 7 pages, to appear in IROS 202
Safe Whole-Body Task Space Control for Humanoid Robots
Complex robotic systems require whole-body controllers to deal with contact
interactions, handle closed kinematic chains, and track task-space control
objectives. However, for many applications, safety-critical controllers are
important to steer away from undesired robot configurations to prevent unsafe
behaviors. A prime example is legged robotics, where we can have tasks such as
balance control, regulation of torso orientation, and, most importantly,
walking. As the coordination of multi-body systems is non-trivial, following a
combination of those tasks might lead to configurations that are deemed
dangerous, such as stepping on its support foot during walking, leaning the
torso excessively, or producing excessive centroidal momentum, resulting in
non-human-like walking. To address these challenges, we propose a formulation
of an inverse dynamics control enhanced with exponential control barrier
functions for robotic systems with numerous degrees of freedom. Our approach
utilizes a quadratic program that respects closed kinematic chains, minimizes
the control objectives, and imposes desired constraints on the Zero Moment
Point, friction cone, and torque. More importantly, it also ensures the forward
invariance of a general user-defined high Relative-Degree safety set. We
demonstrate the effectiveness of our method by applying it to the 3D biped
robot Digit, both in simulation and with hardware experiments.Comment: 8 pages, 12 figure

Upslope Walking with Transfemoral Prosthesis Using Optimization Based Spline Generation
Powered prosthetic devices are robotic systems that are aimed to restore the mobility of subjects with amputations above the knee by imitating the behavior of a normal human leg. Powered prostheses have diverse advantages compared to passive devices, including the possibility of reducing the metabolic cost of the user, providing net power into the walking gait and walking on diverse terrain. In particular, this thesis is focused on the capacity of powered transfemoral prostheses to adapt to diverse terrains. Since most terrains consist of flat and inclined surfaces, it is important that a transfemoral prosthesis can walk on these surfaces and have the capacity to seamlessly transition from one surface to another. However, currently available controllers require either intention recognition procedures that delay the terrain transition or a collection of parameters that require a large tuning process for each possible surface profile. In this thesis, we propose a framework that can generate automatically stable and human-like gaits for both surfaces with immediate transition between them. The new framework is based on human-inspired control and a spline-based trajectory generation. Specifically, the proposed method i) inserts a set of cubic splines that smoothly blend the flat ground joint trajectories into arbitrary upslope surface joint trajectories for the ankle and knee joints and ii) employs a low gain PD control for terrain adaptation for various unknown surfaces. This framework is implemented on the powered transfemoral prosthetic device, AMPRO II, for both flat ground and upslope walking to test its use as a nominal controller. The experimental results confirm that the proposed framework provides walking gaits for flat ground and upslope with seamlessly smooth transitioning gaits between them
